Manson, Reznor Mend Fences; NIN Cancels Show
After an estrangement of
several years, Trent
Reznor and his one-time
protege Marilyn Manson
have put aside their own
differences and come
together on camera and on
stage. However, the
reunion may have been a bit
much for Reznor.
Manson joined Reznor and his
Nine Inch Nails on
stage Tuesday night at New
York's Madison
Square Garden for NIN's
encore, lending his
vocals to "Starf***ers, Inc."
and Manson's own
"The Beautiful People."
The surprise guest appearance
nearly brought
down the roof of the Garden,
but it also seems to
have taken a toll on Reznor.
The following day,
NIN announced the cancellation
of Wednesday
night's show at the nearby
Nassau Coliseum.
Representatives for Reznor
noted that the move was
due to the frontman's
"swollen vocal cords and
vocal strain" and urged fans
to seek refunds for their
tickets at the point of
purchase.
Prior to Tuesday's onstage
reunion, Reznor and Manson had
mended fences
and come together to shoot the
video for
"Starf***ers, Inc.," which
sees the formerly
estranged duo united to take
aim at a host of
other pop notables.
"It feels good to be back
united again,
because I think that the bad
guys have taken
over," Reznor told MTV News on
Tuesday of the
peace accord between the two.
"We shouldn't be competing.
There's much
more terrible music out there
that we should
unite against," Manson added.
In the video, Reznor takes a
date (Manson in
drag) to a bizarro carnival,
where the NIN
frontman strolls through the
midway, eventually
stopping to toss baseballs at
plates adorned with
the faces of such stars as
Fred Durst, Billy
Corgan, Michael Stipe, and
even Manson himself.
"We remember a phase where
every time
you opened up 'Rolling Stone,'
there's a
picture of Michael Stipe
popping out of
somebody's underpants, and
then it was Billy
Corgan everywhere," Reznor
said.
"We didn't want to make a
video that was
like, 'We're bitchy because
Limp Bizkit's
doing better than we are... in
their minds,'"
Manson explained.
"Look, I'm not going to say
Limp Bizkit
sucks," Reznor added. "You
know it. I know it.
I'm not going to say it."
However, the duo gets even
nastier in its attack
on Courtney Love, who is
portrayed in the video
as an aging, overweight,
overly made-up former
prom queen who resides in the
carnival's dunk
tank atop a vat simply marked
"waste."
"Manson said it best: There's
mean, and then
this is just brutal,"
[RealVideo] Reznor said.
