We're In This Together
London cabbies are not given to letting
common sense get in the way of an
opinion, but occasionally their
blinkered bluntness hits the spot. "I
don't like grunge," one told me
recently. "They should string 'em all up, apart from
Nirvana - so much guts and balls." And if every
genre has at least one standout act or song then
We're In This Together is the first great industrial
song.
Yes, it is obviously NIN but more structured, more
melodic. It kicks off with crackling vinyl and
something like grandfather clocks ticking on fast
forward. Eerie and atmospheric, it's ideal for a
Hollywood chiller. Add some primeval screaming
guitars, a Rage against the Machine baseline and
Galaxy 500 sound-loops and you're halfway to
understanding what this track is all about. The
energy of it all is immense, the impact
thermonuclear.
Reznor should be applauded for creating one of the
most original songs for some time. Strap down your
prejudices and give this a pop: you won't be
disappointed.
